In Remembrance: John Traubert, M.D.
The WVU School of Medicine community mourns the loss of John Traubert, M.D., a beloved physician, educator and leader whose contributions to family medicine and medical education have left a lasting legacy.
Friends and family will be received at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 3346 University Ave., Star City, on Saturday, July 19, from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 am, with Father John McDonough as celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the St. Mary’s Peace Gardens Mausoleum. A repast lunch will follow at the WVU Health Sciences Pylons Lobby.
“When you think about the qualities we practice and teach our medical students, Dr. Traubert lived and embodied the mission to the fullest,” Clay Marsh, M.D., WVU Health Sciences chancellor and executive dean, said. “His teachings continue to inspire and impact students, providers and their patients.”
Dr. Traubert served as professor and founding chair of the Department of Family Medicine, a residency program director, and later as associate dean for Student and Curricular Affairs.
“His dedication to his community and the practice of compassionate, patient-centered care was carried forward throughout his academic career at the University,” Carl Shrader, M.D., chair of the Department of Family Medicine, said. “In Dr. Traubert’s words, ‘being a physician is not just providing care to a patient, but also caring about the patient.’"
Dr. Traubert’s impact extends beyond the department; he served on the University Faculty Council and as president of the University Academic Senate. His commitment to teaching, mentoring and caring for others continues to inspire medical students and faculty alike.
Upon his retirement as Dean of Students, the School of Medicine named the M.D. program's White Coat Ceremony in his honor. The White Coat Ceremony welcomes medical students entering the clinical curriculum and emphasizes the importance of both scientific proficiency and compassion.
He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for the kindness, integrity, and mentorship he extended to all who knew him, said Shrader.
The repast luncheon is hosted by the WVU School of Medicine, WVU Department of Family Medicine and the WVU School of Medicine Alumni Association.
