Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics

A bachelor's degree in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics combines lectures, laboratories and clinical experience.

The first two years involve completing pre-requisite courses at WVU's main or regional campuses, or any regionally accredited college or university. The coursework here sets you up for future success by equipping you with the "behind-the-scenes" knowledge of what's happening in the human body.

The second two years are more hands-on, based at the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and consist of lectures, student laboratory instruction and clinical experience at one of the program’s affiliated laboratories.

Who You Are

Finding a treatment for a patient starts with identifying the problem, and laboratory professionals do just that. They serve as a critical part of the care team that gives necessary information to providers who then use it to craft the patient's care plan.

You can specialize in two areas.

  • Histotechnology

Histotechnologists are integral to the success of the anatomic pathology department by performing routine and complex procedures to preserve and process tissue specimens.

  • Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Scientists are skilled laboratory professionals that perform laboratory testing on blood and bodily fluids to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients.

Facts

  • 100% employment rate
Graduates find employment or enroll in a graduate program within months of graduation.
  • $50,000+
Starting salaries average $50,000 plus per year with an undergraduate degree.

What You'll Do

Although you are not often personally involved with patients, medical laboratory scientists and histotechnologists play a crucial role in the process of providing personalized care.

You work in laboratory settings such as hospital, clinic, state, reference, research, veterinary, forensic, pharmaceutical and other laboratory environments.

A degree in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics from WVU is an excellent preparation for graduate school in the medical or dental professions or in the basic sciences.
